The Story & Collection of Peggy Guggenheim Collection
The collection is displayed in Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, which American heiress Peggy Guggenheim purchased and made her home for thirty years. She began opening her private collection to the public seasonally in 1951. After her death in 1979, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation took control and opened the collection year-round from 1980.
The artworks reflect Guggenheim's acquisitive eye between 1938 and 1946, when she bought works across Europe and America, including pieces by Picasso, Kandinsky, Dalí, Magritte, and Jackson Pollock. The collection emphasizes Cubism, Surrealism, and abstract expressionism, featuring works by Italian futurists and American modernists alongside sculptures. The surrounding Nasher Sculpture Garden provides outdoor exhibition space within the palazzo's grounds.
