The Story & Collection of Duomo di Milano
Construction began in 1386 under Archbishop Antonio da Saluzzo, at the time Gian Galeazzo Visconti was rising to power in Milan, and the last details were finished in 1965. The building is brick faced with marble from Candoglia, and it combines Gothic and Renaissance design. The façade was completed on Napoleon's orders before he was crowned King of Italy here in 1805. The Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo still looks after the cathedral today.
Inside, 40 pillars divide five broad naves under a roof about 45 metres high, and the church holds up to 40,000 people. A nail said to come from the Crucifixion is kept high above the altar and shown once a year. Above it all rises the Madonnina, the gilded statue of the Virgin placed on the highest spire in 1762, 108.5 metres above the square.
The roof terraces are the highlight for many visitors: you walk between 135 spires and countless marble statues, with views across Milan. On Tiqets you can choose a cathedral entry ticket, rooftop access on its own, a combined entry and rooftop ticket (also with fast track), or a guided tour with the rooftop included.
Book ahead for the terraces in particular, as they are the busiest part of the visit, and choose a clear day for the views. The Duomo is a working cathedral, so dress respectfully and expect a security check at the entrance.
