Ambitie & Verlangen — Stedelijk Museum Breda
Curatorial Note
About the Exhibition: Ambitie & Verlangen
Photos, advertising material, paintings and characteristic objects show how steam industry and modernisation transformed the city. The old castle became the Royal Military Academy, the fortifications made way for ambitious expansion, and factories such as Wittouck, Backer & Rueb and Kwatta brought prosperity and jobs.
Progress also sparked a longing for the past, felt in the romantic paintings and drawings of Breda painters such as Huysmans, Kannemans and Van Schendel, and in the idyllic country scenes of Allebé and Liebermann. Children can follow a guessing-game trail and test their inventing talents in the Fabriek van Breda.
