About the Exhibition: De eerste vlucht
In 1909 the owner of the Etten-Leur sugar factory wanted to celebrate its anniversary in a special way and came up with the idea of letting an aeroplane take off there. No one in the Netherlands held a pilot's licence, so Count Charles de Lambert agreed to give a flying demonstration.
Strong wind kept delaying the demonstration, but in the early evening the count took off and flew about 1 kilometre in 3.5 minutes at a height of around 15 metres. Engine trouble then forced him down, making it the first motorised flight in the country.
