About the Exhibition: Dopen – Trouwen – Rouwen. Textiel & tradities
The museum's textile collection includes christening gowns, wedding dresses and regional mourning dress. Since the Reformation the Hoeksche Waard was an agricultural and strictly Protestant community in which the church played a major role, and family milestones were recorded in church registers.
Alongside the garments, visitors see related objects such as mourning jewellery and hair work, and learn about the traditions of marrying in white and mourning in black. The museum's own collection is supplemented with special loans, and lectures and workshops are organised during the exhibition.
