About the Exhibition: Heiligen & Helden – Sint-Justus, Rubens en de pelgrims
The Saint Justus relic returns to Zutphen and is shown with the altarpiece The Miracle of Saint Justus by Peter Paul Rubens. The story goes back to the Reformation, when canon Egbert Spitholt took the saint's skull to Antwerp for safekeeping, where a cult of Saint Justus later arose.
Rubens painted the large altarpiece for the Antwerp publisher Moretus, and it travels from the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux to the Netherlands for the first time. Special loans from Belgium and the Netherlands add the theme of pilgrimage and veneration.
