About the Exhibition: Het zeegat uit. Zout op je lippen
Skilled hands built ship models with fine rigging and tiny pulleys, both as decoration and to instruct crews. Shipowners also liked to have their vessels painted at sea under full sail, and these ship portraits reflect their owners' pride.
The collection also includes a figurehead and a foghorn, plus stories such as that of commander Klaas Hoekstra, who set off whaling for Greenland. His new ship was crushed in the polar ice, yet his crew, long given up for dead, returned to Harlingen after a year of horrors. Merchant shipping and the admiralty also feature.
