About the Exhibition: Hooggeëerd bezoek. Koninklijke visites aan Groningen
Over the centuries the flags regularly went up in Groningen when the royal family came to visit, and the Menkemaborg also received royal company several times. Among them were King Willem III, who joined the lord of the manor for a festive lunch, and Queen Wilhelmina, Prince Hendrik and young Princess Juliana, who signed the guest book.
The exhibition explores the world behind these visits: why the Oranjes travelled to the Ommelanden, which rituals and etiquette were involved, and what a day like that looked like, from clothing and menu to the procession and the onlookers. It also asks what it all meant for the residents of the manor and for the people of Groningen.
