About the Exhibition: Identiteit in kleur
In West Africa, what a woman wears often tells who she is, what she does and what she values. The printing technique was inspired by Indonesian batik and developed mechanically by European manufacturers, and its history is also linked to the Twente textile industry.
Visitors discover how prints work as a means of communication, a status symbol and fashion at once, with patterns that carry names and stories. A selection of fabrics shows how pattern, colour and material form a strong visual identity, with a key role for the Dutch company Vlisco.
