About the Exhibition: Jacob & Coba Ritsema – Broer achter zus
Jacob Ritsema worked as a landscape painter in Elspeet and later returned regularly to the Veluwe. He is usually described as the brother of Coba, a well-known Amsterdamse Joffer. While Jacob left for the art academy in Düsseldorf at 15, Coba stayed closer to home and developed her talent at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam.
Their careers took different paths: Jacob worked in artists' colonies in Elspeet, Nunspeet, Laren and Kortenhoef, while Coba belonged to the Amsterdamse Joffers, a collective of nine women artists. The show also pays attention to the other Joffers and explains why Coba became better known than her brother.
