Koffer vol verhalen: Friese dienstmeisjes vertellen — Museum Opsterlân
Curatorial Note
About the Exhibition: Koffer vol verhalen: Friese dienstmeisjes vertellen
Found letters, diaries, personal stories and striking portraits introduce women who shaped their own lives with strength and courage despite difficult circumstances. You meet Sophia, who sets off for Paris, Geertje, who has to leave her village of Broek to work in Gorredijk, and Neeltje, known through her employer's diaries.
Specially furnished rooms and historic objects make the past tangible and show what the maids' work involved and why it mattered. Their stories still touch on themes such as independence, inequality of opportunity and the search for freedom.
