About the Exhibition: Kracht van kronieken, het oudste geschiedenisboek van Gelderland komt thuis
The manuscript belonged to the Lords of Bergh and contains the oldest known chronicle of Guelders, the Cronijck van Gelre. It is notable for its size, its content and its unique coloured pen drawings, and the chronicles use history to tell a story about power.
The book opens with the popes, followed by chronicles of the bishoprics of Cologne, Liège, Münster and Utrecht, and of territories such as Guelders, Holland, Brabant, Mark and Cleves. Visitors also learn about Willem II of Bergh and his son Oswald, who was made an imperial count.
