Vincent Ruijters – Crimson Gilt

The work is built from knitted strips in gold and crimson. Gold stands for prosperity and trade, red for colonialism and exploitation, together showing the tension of a shared but unequal history.

Visitors can walk through the illusion of the ship in a space overlooking the replica next to the museum. A soundscape and a video connect Amsterdam with Indonesia and Japan, following the route many VOC ships took.
