About the Exhibition: Carel Willink
The display traces the development of a searching artist who grew into the unrivalled painter of a technically perfect, elegant and enigmatic oeuvre. Inspired by Giorgio de Chirico, Willink created deserted streets, squares and parks that became his trademark, and he studied Old Masters such as Holbein and Vermeer. He also painted portraits, including those of Freddy Heineken and Queen Juliana.
The collection in the castle rotates, but masterpieces by the painter are always on show. Visitors discover monumental architectural settings, ominous skies and a modern world of nuclear power stations and ruined temples.
