About the Exhibition: Verhaal van Veenhuizen
Over the past two centuries Veenhuizen served as a colony for orphans and beggars, as a state work institution and as a prison village. The bottom of society was re-educated there, learned to work or served a sentence.
Visitors discover, for example, that orphans travelled for days to reach Veenhuizen and that patients were carried to the cemetery after death in a reusable coffin. The main themes include the boat journey there and the daily life of the orphans.
