Vrouwelick — Stadhuismuseum Zierikzee
Curatorial Note
About the Exhibition: Vrouwelick
Seventeenth-century poet Jacob Cats argued that people should control their feelings rather than follow their desires. His Houwelick, a marriage manual in verse from 1625, centres on the role of women, a topic that is again very much in the spotlight today.
Taking the 400-year-old book as a starting point, the exhibition explores opposing views: traditional roles defended by nature or religion, versus equal opportunities and self-determination. Do Cats' verses reflect a patriarchal worldview or appreciation of female strength? Visitors are invited to think along about the role of women and men, then and now.
