About the Exhibition: Schelpengrot

Anna van Ewsum and her husband George had the grotto built in the garden around 1700. Its walls are covered with shells, and a legend surrounds how it came to be.

According to the story, a curious maid found chests of gold and jewels in the count's garden house and was punished by having to decorate every wall with shells. Visitors can wonder whether the tale is true.
