About the Exhibition: Kees Verwey – A painter for a lifetime
Verwey kept everything, from childhood drawings to final works, and the depot of his foundation makes it possible to follow his growth up close. Often seen as traditional, he made forays into innovation, learning from his teacher Henri Frédéric Boot and drawing inspiration from artists such as Picasso, Matisse, Bonnard and Karel Appel.
The show highlights his tension between tradition and innovation, with works such as Beach at Zandvoort and Ode to Bonnard. Observation remained his driving force, so that painting or drawing was always a new adventure.
