Matthew Monahan – Left Hand Path

Monahan works with materials such as aluminium, paper, bronze, plaster, steel, gold leaf and plastic, shaping them so that their identity is never clear: what looks hard is soft and vulnerable, and what looks fragile is rigid and industrial. The human figure is central but appears in parts, as limbs, heads and fragments that are broken off, shifted and reassembled.

Visitors encounter a sense of decay and disintegration alongside a new, composite beauty. Steel structures act as both supports and cages, and the fold, sometimes elegant and sometimes violent, plays a key role.
