About the Exhibition: Wandtapijten

The series was made between 1593 and 1604 for the States of Zeeland and shows six moments from the Eighty Years' War. Burning ships, strong fortifications and officers fleeing across a sandbank can all be found in the richly detailed scenes.

Several sea battles are depicted, and the tapestries were also meant to retain warmth, keep out draughts and impress the other states. Their central message is that it was the people of Zeeland, not Holland, who drove out the Spaniards.
