De geschiedenis van het Wierdenlandschap

Thanks to a long settlement history of sometimes more than 2500 years, every wierde holds a rich soil archive. A special find from the wierde De Bouwerd, the double horse grave with a dog, is among the most spectacular in Groningen archaeology.

The collection shows how the natural salt marsh along the Frisian-Groningen coast was changed over the centuries by the people who settled there, creating a cultural landscape dotted with raised dwelling mounds. Special attention goes to the Nationaal Landschap Middag-Humsterland, the oldest cultural landscape in the Netherlands, easy to visit from the museum.
