About the Exhibition: Mummie Mysteries
Two thousand years ago, cats, ibises and crocodiles were carefully embalmed and wrapped as sacred animals, pets, gifts to the gods or food for the deceased. In Fryslân, animal mummies often arose by accident through natural conditions, such as a cat found in a crawl space, a rat behind wallpaper and a dried bat that surfaced from a vase.
Visitors discover how mummification works and why animals were mummified, and learn how animals are prepared today and for what purpose. The show is part of the project Onder Ons, an initiative of the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden in Leiden.
