About the Exhibition: Op reis met Van Gijn

Between 1850 and 1907 Simon van Gijn made dozens of trips and wrote accounts of 30 of them, noting where they went, what the trip cost, where they ate and what they saw. He was no adventurer and followed Baedeker's advice carefully, yet his accounts read like a novel.

They give a fascinating picture of a world very different from ours, yet full of recognisable things such as visiting churches and museums or taking a trip on Lake Como. Visitors may wonder who now stays five weeks in first-class hotels or travels in a morning coat and top hat.
